Two tracks by Conga Succès:

Both tracks were re-issued on African 360.001, which I don't have.

Nguashi N'timbo - Shauri Yako (ASL 3393)

Finally I've got a copy of "Sauri Yako" with Orchestre Festival du Zaire and I'm happy to share it at 320 kbits.

On side 2 the tone arm had a lot to do, you may hear it. Anyway enjoy this wonderful music!

Burning Spear - Living Dub (PRELP3)

My favorite dub album from one of my favorite reggae albums. When I've first heard this in Zensor's small record shop I felt myself in another world, a world with angels, but another kind of angels than those I knew from listening to music by Bach or Haendel.

Im sure you will enjoy this one! Pay attention to Rico's trombone.

Living Dub was reissued on CD by Heartbeat in a different mix and some years ago in the original mix by Winston Rodney himself (look for "Original Living Dub Vol. 1", it should be available).

Nguashi N'timbo - Shauri Yako

This is kind of a special post and I'd like to thank two friends for giving their files.

Recently Moos shared another Nguashi LP, Manguta, you've seen here too. Pius offered in the comments a CD rip of "Shauri Yako". 'Oh that's great', I thought and got in contact. Thank you, Pius; I share the whole thing, a compilation by Tamasha Records from Kenya with the following track list:

Some more time ago, maybe two years or so, I've got - thank's again, Zim - this rip of (a tape copy of) Nguashi's LP with Orchestre Festival du Zaire, which was as far as I can see the original Shauri Yako release ; on the LP there are two tracks we know from GGs Citoyen LP, "Citoyen" and "Mama" as well as "Liwa", "Shauri Yako" and "Bosomele". The quality is not so good, but the power is great, especially for "Shauri Yako".

So I decides to share the both and hope you will enjoy

Orchestre Flambeau - Benalu / Banzaka Ngai Fifi (African 90.988 B)

The B-side here is written by a certain Mansia Mina Mfoko - yes, better know as Bopol Mansiamina, who was at the time - 1975 - , as far as I found out, working for Tabu Ley and playing with Afrisa International.
The A-side is written by (Augustin) Nsingi Mageda, who was solo guitarist with Les Grands Maquisards until their split in 1974. If that means that the two worked together here? This release is "Flambeau 11" which means that they had their own label in Zaire and that this was already an 11th single?! Until now I couldn't find one other release - and nothing else. Can you help us with more background?

Mayaoula Mayoni (Disc-Orient D.O. 0024)

Mayaula, who passed away last year was already here with a 1970s single, "Ye Mon Amour". I'm happy to share another record, 12" 33rpm with two tracks, "Bon Anniversaire" and "Tonton Akué". In the early 1980s Mayaula released at least 3 records in Abijan (in 1982 D.O. 0022 with four tracks, here at Global Groove) I don't know if he was in those years in Abidjan and if he recorded this material there. The short biographies on the web are more than short and can't help.

Orchestre African Mod Matata (EMI Pathé, 1976)

Some weeks ago I shared with you an African single by Orch. Africa Mode Matata and asked for more informtion on that group. Poltroon refered to this LP which was released two years later. Despite the slightly different name it must be the same group.

On the cover we see the band with four singers in the frontline. And it's their vocal harmony which makes this album special. Third from left is a small man, who's name must be Toussaint Mobenga, who is according to Matthew Lavoie the founder of A.M.M., starting this orchestra after the split of Orchestre Novelty in 1966 (more here).

Third World: Now That We've Found Love

1985 was a year when the decline of Island Records already had started. One sign was that they started to compile and reissue older material: one series was called "Reggae Greats". The release of a volume for Third World was accompanied by two 12 inch singles: and all they told us was to dance - day and night.

Hugh Masekela - Waiting For The Rain (Jive) 1985

This is Hugh Masekela's 2nd LP recorded in Botswana - close to his land South Africa but respecting the boycott of the apartheid regime. He's been waiting for the rain and for freedom in South Africa. The LP starts off with Fela Kuti's "Lady" and closes with "Zulu Wedding".

One out of many African singles with Orch. Afrisa. This sleese like many other in the series shows Tabu Ley with an Afro which made quite a strong distinction to Franco and other Kinshasa stars.

Orchestre Africa Mode Matata (African 90.702)

Two tracks from this - to me otherwise - unknown orchestra: "Bandoki ya profiter" and "Nazongi yamba ngai" which were released on the Editions Populaires with number 139. This is from 1973. If you know more, please feel free to comment.

Johnny Johnson And His Bandwagon - (Blame It) On The Pony Express

Well, it's October and I'll start this month with an unusual post neither linked to Africa nor to Rico. But it's a personal thing, my first ever record I bought in 1970.
As I still like it I think it's the place to share it with you.

If you want more by Johnny Johnson, you may find a CD compilation with 24 tracks released in 2008 on Ace CDKENT 307 distributed by the usual retailers.

Ingeli - Mgr Bigirumwami

I started with this blog one year ago! Hurray! I started with a tape from Rwanda. These tapes were my main reason to do the blog as I couldn't see somebody with that music - so I will share today another group from Rwanda, Orchestre Ingeli; it's from 1986.

One member of Ingeli remained active, playing music and releasing CDs: Jean-Paul Samputu (more here at Frank Bessem's pageand at Wikipedia) who's family was victim of the genozide.

Hugh Masekela - Techno-Bush

1984 and 1985 Hugh Masekela released two albums on the Jive label, both recorded in Botswana (near but not in South Africa during those days of boycott).

Most but by far not all tracks were re-released on a CD called "Liberation. The Best of Hugh Masekela". From "Techno-Bush" they scraped out my favorite tracks, "Getting Fat in Africa" and "African Secret Society". So here is the entire record. I love it. Hope you will enjoy too! Mbongeni Ngema's Sarafina!

Some time ago I shared "Time to Unite". Now it's time to offer you "Sarafina!" which became a musical and a film in the US. Originally on WM Gallo, Shanashie released this in South Africa recorded version with a contribution by Hugh Masekela in Canada, Celluloid in France.

Two more versions were recorded, the "Original Broadway Cast" and the "Music from the Motion Picture".

L'Afrique Danse (African 360.042)

I recently got this record and as always I was quite curious about it's content. Now it's more diverse than expected with some classic tunes (the one by OK Jazz was already presented by several blogs and is a real classic). Sikati by Tala Andre Marie is more French pop, and Manu Dibango is M.B. - he's also credited to the last track by Ryco Jazz.

Let's come back to Dr. Nico with a somehow strange A-side, a dialogue between trumpet and guitar. On the back it's more classic with a wonderful sax solo. From 1970, originally released on Sukisa 507. Enjoy!

Les Frères Guisse - Fama (African Folk Music)

This was the first release by Les Frères Guisse from Senegal who are still more or less active and released their last album in 2008 (Yakaar) which may still be available at various online traders. Some of their actual songs can be heard here at MySpace.
